GSM Visa Processing times for DIAC (particularly subclass 475)

Recently I have been getting lots of posts from people wanting me to tell them how long going it’s going to take DIAC to process their GSM visa applciation, partulcarly the sub class 475.  Unfortunately I don’t have a crystal ball that I can look into and predict how current DIAC current policies (given current economic climate & political stance on immigration) or DIAC’s internal structure policy is going to influence processing times).  I wish I could!  Iwould be a very popular migration agent indeed.  Anyway, I think only time will tell how long it is going to take, cliched but true.  For most of the people who have recently applied, if you consider an approximate processing time of say 9-12 months, there is no need to hit the panic button until you come to the latter stages of this timeline.  If you lodged an application in February this year don’t start pestering your agent for a hit prediction as to when you will have a visa.  I think it’s unfair on yourself and unfair on your poor agent.

I would like to invite any one out there who is waiting on a visa approval to post a comment when you do get your visa approval advising your visa sub class applied for, your date of lodgement, date you did your medicals and the date your visa was granted. I would invite anyothers awaiting a visa approval to do the same so that others in a similar situation may be able to get an idea of timing.

All the best,

Mege Dalton

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Pls note we read one liner message downloaded from internet sight called “Visa Beureau” for subclass 475. In this it is mentioneed that “People who have applied for the above said visa, have to re apply for the same subclass and to deposit the fee once again” What is that mean?

Also note we have applied under the catagory of “Education Officer” under which i have got the successful state sponsership, under SIR(provisional) visa for South Australia. We lodged the application on 14 th July and till date we are not able to see any improvement on our case.

Our agent is keep on syaing that visa application are picked on random basis. Is this true? or there is any a system?.

Also advice where i can see my case progress or is there any link?

Regards

Hi

I really don’t about the Visa bureau site you referred to and what they mean by the post.

Processing times for the sub class 475 can take up to 12 months. If you lodged in July 08, it’s only April now, you should not start worrying yet. There is a que for visa applications to be processed, it’s not possible to know where your application is in the que. Your agent can check the progress online at the http://www.imm.gov.au website.

All the best,
Mege Dalton

Dear Mege Dalton,

I have some what different experience with this regard. I have lodged my visa application in end March in this year (2009) for the SIR visa (475) for the South Australia.

Surprisingly within 20 days I got a case officer and he has requested for medical examination.

what is the normal time line for visa granting after appointing a case officer

Dr Russel

Thankyou for your query. It’s a waiting process, don’t expect your status to change immediately. If the status indicates Application Being Processed, it means it is with your case officer who will be in touch if they require anything further from you.

I would like to share a recent announcment of DIAC what can envisage about getting visa.

You may be aware the Immigration Department announced changes to the Critical Skills List on 16 March 2009. At that time it was advised that General Skilled visa applications would be processed by the Department in the following order of priority processing:
• employer-sponsored permanent migration applications, where skilled migrants are sponsored to go into jobs unable to be filled locally.
• applicants nominated by state and territory governments, who were also given greater scope to meet critical skill shortages in their jurisdiction; and
• applicants who have nominated an occupation on the CSL .
In order to meet with these priorities only Employer, State/Territory sponsored and CSL cases are currently being processed. What this means is that if your application does not fit into one of the three categories above your application will wait until at least the end of this program year being 30th June 2009 and at this stage the Immigration Department is unable to provide any advice on processing beyond this timeframe.
Unfortunately this also impacts on those clients whose visa applications have already been lodged and may have previously been allocated a Case Officer. The processing policy has now been applied to all applications, both lodged and about to be lodged.
However there is some good news. The Immigration Department have advised that currently lodged applicants can seek sponsorship from State/Territories and if successful apply to ‘change’ their application from a Skilled Independent (subclass 175 visa) to a Skilled Sponsored (subclass 176).
If we have lodged your visa application and you would like us to discuss this option with you please call our UK office. No fees or charges will apply for this service.
Please note: The fact that DIAC is now only processing General Skills Migration applications which are State/Territory sponsored, or which have nominated occupations on the new Critical Skills List does not mean that other GSM applications cannot be lodged. This is simply a method of prioritising the processing so that the Government can better address the current skills shortages in the current economic climate. GSM applications which are not on the processing priority list can still be lodged.
This change is beyond our control and it is our job to advise you that GSM applications which are not on the priority processing lists may have a very long wait. The length of the wait for non-priority applications is something that no-one, including DIAC, can estimate with any accuracy.

Regards

Occupation: Statistician 2293-13
State Sponsorship available: Victoria(Only)

I have applied for Skills Assessment(Vetassess), i have more than 4 years working experience in Marketin & Sales, my question is,, will Victoria grant me the sponsorship(with irrelevant experience)? My MBA will complete in June 2009. Will MBA give me any edge in obtaining Sponsorship?

In the Victorian Sponsorship form,, how much money should i show in my account? AU$ 15 – 20,000 will be enough?
What particular area should i choose to settle?

Kindly reply.

Dear Mege,
Greetings !

I have applied for visa subtype 475 in june 08. It’s more than 11 months now but there no CO alloted yet. when i ask my agent he always asks me to waite for some more time. As i am already in 12th month of waiting -
1. Shall i press my agent to follow up?
2. Does he has any role to play in CO allocation ?
3. Can an agent inquire the status of an application which does not have CO?
4. What do you expect -do we have any chance in this financial year or we need to waite till next (i.e. July 09) :-(

Your reply would be highly appriciated.

Hi Jaz,

I can’t just give you a yes or no to your question this would not be professionally responsible of me, applying for a permanent visa if you are or were a holder of a substantive Australian student visa is based on a number of additional requirements not just your current visa status.

However, in general, Skilled independent visa sub class 885 and Skilled sponsored visa sub class 886 are permanent visas available to overseas students who have completed 2 years of study within the last six months and each qualification counting towards the 2 years of study must be closely related to the nomination occupation.

Does your cousin have a migration agent who is handling the Skilled Graduate 485 visa application? If so, they should be able to review his details in full and explain if he or she is in a position to lodge an application.

Kind regards,
Mege Dalton

Hi Jags,

Thanks for your comment on this forum. To be honest, it’s very difficult for me to say how much longer you could be waiting and your agent will be in the same situation. Migration agents do not have any role in CO allocation.

The Department of Immigration is reducing its number of case officers so this will slow down processing. We are also coming to the end of the Australian financial year and with the reduction in skilled visa quota, it’s a possibility that the Department of Immigration has no more visa approvals to give out until 1 July 2009.
In your case it does seem like a very long time to be waiting for a case officer allocation. Can I ask what skilled occupation you nominated for your application and who sponsored your application?

Perhaps contact your migration agent again and ask for their feedback on the situation and if they have received any specific or general advice from the Department of Immigration regarding processing of sub class 475 visa applications.

Kind regards,
Mege Dalton

Dear Danish,

Thankyou for your post to this forum.

Do you have any work experience at all as a Statistician? Did your marketing and sales job rely on your training as a statistician?

You need to show you have recent work experience of 12 out of the last 24 months.

Victoria does not require you to prove your financial status, however you do need to have adequate funds to support yourself.

In relation to where to live in Australia, I suggest you do some research into different areas in Victoria, this is a useful link
http://www.liveinvictoria.vic.gov.au/living-in-victoria/melbourne-and-regional-victoria

Kind regards,
Mege Dalton

Your MBA is a positive as it means you are highly qualified individual but it will only add value to your sponsorship application not be a determining factor on its own.

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship recognises that the time

concern.

The case officer is currently conducting a preliminary assessment on
your visa application to determine if they require any further
documentation to process your application. Once this assessment has been completed your case officer may contact you if they require any additional documents
details as follows :

Hello Nahla,

Thankyou for your comments. You have most certainly been waiting a long time for this advice from your case officer. It’s good that it has finally come. Given the changes to the processing of applications, this advice could indicate that the case officer is now looking at your sub class 475 application within the new framework of priority processing of sponsored visa applications. This could mean that it is now finally being assessed and hopefully you will receive a further advice as to what else might be required to finalise your application.

You have been waiting for a 1 year and 7 months now, I hope you will not be waiting for much longer.

All the best.

Mege Dalton

Dear Mege,

I lodged my visa application under subclass 475 under state/territory nomination from South Australia. I lodged my application in the month of December and my case officer was alloted in the month of feb and they asked to undergo medical tests and also obtain PCC. I have done that and also scanned across the documents to them. I completed all the formalities within March only, but till date i have had no reply from them. Could you please let me know as to how much more time will it take for visa processing. My nominated occupation is “Sales & Marketing Manager” and the ASCO Code is 1231-11.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Thank you for your e-mail in relation to your visa application under

We are seeking to finalise your application as soon as possible. You will
appreciate, however, that all non-citizens applying for visas to enter
Australia are considered on their individual merits and against legal
requirements set out in Australia’s migration legislation. This often
includes requirements for mandatory health, character and national
security or other checks that are undertaken by other agencies and can
take some time.

The timing for the completion of the checks varies from one case to
another depending on individual circumstances. Unfortunately, I am unable
to provide you with a definitive timeframe for finalisation of your
application as some cases may take many months to finalise.

You can be assured, however, that the Department of Immigration and
Citizenship staff will do all they can to ensure that your application is
finalised as quickly as possible.

We appreciate your patience in this matter.

All the Best

Hi Arunangshu,

Thank you for your comment but I can’t predict how much more time you will be waiting for a decsion onb your sub class 475. If you lodged in Dec 08 and have reached your medicals and pcc stages by March 09 you are one of the lucky ones, some people you will see on this blog has been waiting for 1 year and 7 months so far and haven’t even had a case officer allocated to their application yet.
I would suggest you play the waiting game some more but be confident in the fact that your application is clearly in the higher category of priority processing.

Kind regards,
Mege Dalton

Hi MS,

The change in status could mean your application has been allocated, particularly if you have a CSL occupation. There is no specified time for how it takes DIAC to assign applications to its case officers.

Hi Shon,

Thanks for posting this on this blog. I have to say it certainly shows a softer more empathetic side of the Department of Immigration not really seen before. I think they are finally realising that a lot of visa applicants feel like they are in a purgatory about what is happening with their applications, that behind all the File reference numbers are actual people. Good on the DIAC for inserting some humanity into this bureaucratic process! better late than never.

I hope that your own visa application is finalised soon.

Kind regards,
Mege Dalton

Dear Janaka,

one of my friends who lodge his application on May 2008. got his visa last month that means on April.

So, it is clear that they are processing applications which are submitted around May of last month.

because of new priority system, I think there is limited CO for applications which have been lodged before December 2008. So, I think you have to wait another 2-3 months.

did you submit police Clarance and medicals. if not best thing , you better apply for Police clearance, I think you residence in Sri Lanka, and here it will take another 2-3 months to obtain it. if not you have to wait another 2-3 months to subbmit clearance report also.

for your information, I have different experience with this regard. I have lodge my application for 475 Visa for South Australia on April this year (2009). within 20 days I got my case officer and asking from me to submit Medicals and Police clearance report.

I have submit medicals but unfortunately Still try to obtain Police clearance, it very difficult to get clearance report from, with this lethargic officers.

Hi Mege,

In the updates from the GSMB, the allocation dates for 885 is given upto 3rd April ’08. My application was made in Dec ’08. When can I expect a CO allocation given my occupation is on CSL? What is the significance of the allocation information? If I am not allocated a CO, then is it advisable to contact the processing centre to enquire about my application status? Please advise.

Hi Mege,

I paper-lodged my subclass 885 application as accountant with IELTS 7 in all 4 areas in Jan 2009. But I haven’t anything from CO at all? Is it normal? I used an agent but he said it’s common not receiving any news about allocation of CO. Does it mean my case has been allocated to a CO, or not? I have 3 friends who e-lodged their application in Dec, Feb and March, they’ve already got their PR granted few weeks ago. It makes me all worried and nervous now =( I regret for not lodging my application on-line. Please let me know what you think THANKS!!

Cheers,

Hi Romulo,
Thank you for your comment. Since you already have state sponsorship there would be little point and a lot of work to try and get employer sponsorship. In any case both state sponsorship and employer sponsorship are being given priority.
I am assuming that your urgency is because you want it approved whilst you are in Australia on your tourist visa. There is no guarantees that it will be.

Hi PDJ,
Your guess is as good as mine, processing times are far from predictable. It’s good that you changed it over from a sub class 175 to sub class 176, perhaps you could write a little summary of what you had to do to make the changeover so other sub class 175 holders to benefit from your experience.
Hopefully you won’t be waiting much longer for more progression on your case. Have you been asked to do your medicals yet?

Hi mege,

i have been following this url with great interest. your replies are soo helpful. coming to my case. i had paper lodged my application for subclass 475 skilled (regional first cousin sponsored-melbourne). i am a business and IT professional. ASCO – 2299-79, CSL-no, MOdl- no, on Nov 3rd 2008. i tried PLE some months back as i had not received any feedback from DIAC and they replied that i am not authorised to receive the reply(my agent is authorised to receive it). when i asked my agent, he says that since its only 7 months its too early, as according to him it takes around 10-12 months. shall i make the PLE now, giving my agent’s mail id in the authorised mail id column and ask my agent to forward DIAC’s reply back to me? or shall i wait for 1-2 months more? kindly advise.

Hi Mege,

Thanks for your comments,
I have already done medical test, even before the CO assigned to my case, my guess is its not a problem for online applicants, you dont have to waite till the CO request it, this is same for police report

but you only can do this with VISA sub class 176 ,since we know the time frame,

i.e. A CO will be assigned within 10days of submission of confirmation doc. by the state to DIAC.
For this we have to first apply for state sponsorship, then receive a positive results from them and accept it. It may take 8-10weeks normally except ACT.ACT it is 30days.

In my case I try to send PCC also but due to the delay occured, I did not able to sub it before CO request it.

Hi Amy,

You will hear from a CO once they have been allocated to your case and if they require anything further to provided. The big issue is you will not be told when this is going to happen, so unfortunately when it happens and you receive some communications then you know, other than that like many other visa applicants, its a matter of playing the waiting game.

I think it’s important for applicants to understand that the Department of Immigration does have its processes and procedures with dealing with applications. There are rules and regulations it must abide by when processing applications, this governs it’s organisation. If someone has lodged an application, satisfied the requirements, they will be granted a visa. When the visa will be granted is the real question given the current processing time policies that have been recently introduced. The Department of Immigration is not a person with feelings, it does not make decisions on emotions or whether or not it likes the particular applicant. It’s all about regulations.

I am writing this because there a so many people posting comments on this blog about when they will hear from their CO or be granted their visas, and the tone of the posts seems to be that people feel ignored by the Department of Immigration. The Department of Immigration is not ignoring you, it’s government body with it’s own machinery trying to process and approve visa applications. It’s not personal. Not only that there are thousands of other visa applications within this framework which it has to process. As a migration agent I have experienced the Department of Immigration work very efficiently and do good work but there have been other times when the experiences have not been as positive. Overall, it is my own personal opinion that as far any government departments go, it is generally a good one.

Well back to you Amy, sorry for such a long winded response but I just felt this had to be said.

All the best,
Mege Dalton

Hi Vandm,

Thanks for the compliment, I am very happy that my site is proving to be a good resource for many visa applicants from around the world.

In relation to your case, it may well be that your application although sponsored, you don’t have a skilled occupation that is on the CSL or MODL and so it’s not so high on the priority processing list and therefore taking longer. Try not to worry too much, your case is not unique, many people are experiencing the same length of waiting time.

I would recommend you listen to your agent’s advice. If you don’t hear anything at the 10 month mark than contact your agent to enquire and perhaps also ask what their prediction is based on. The Department of Immigration policies are changing on a much regular basis given the economic situation so agents like myself need to keep updating their knowledge and awareness of these different factors before giving clients their opinions.

Kind regards,
Mege Dalton

How can DIACs keep their applicants waiting that long? Dont they understand how important it is for applicants who spent their time and money into this visa to come to australia?

And the worst part is that the wait is unpredictable…which means no one knows when will they hear something…

Thanks Mege. I asked that primarily because I have an unhelpful agent and he lied to me that he submitted my application when in fact he did not. I lost confidence in his work. I asked his assistant about whether or not someone will inform us when we’ve been allocated a CO, but he said his clients don’t normally get informed about whether or not they’ve been allocated a CO. It contradicts with what some applicants say because they were notified once they’ve been allocated a CO. It’s just confusing.

However, when i’ve calculated, my total points for sub class 475 is only 95. Will the 5 points difference resulted to a refusal of my application with DIAC? Would u advise me to take another ielts exam and reach the 25 points ( i’ve got 15 points only last january)before filing my application with DIAC? My nominated occupation is Office Manager.

The short answer is patience. It’s not a guaranteed processing time.

Hi Dale,

If you decide to do your medicals and police clearance certificates for your subclass 176 visa application now rather than wait for a formal request from your case officer that is your prerogative.

You should know that your medicals and police clearances are valid for 12 months and influence your initial entry date once your visa approved. An explanation of the Initial Entry Date has been posted on my site today for anyone who doesn’t know what it is, please read it as I won’t be sending individual response explaining this condition.
The earlier you complete the clearances the shorter the time you have to arrange to enter Australia to activate your visas by the initial entry date. For anyone who is mindful of how expensive it can be to arrange international flights and accommodation to Australia, many people leave the medicals and police clearances until they are officially requested by their case officer.

Kind regards,
Mege Dalton

This is the reply i have got from them

Your enquiry has been referred to the Manager of the area processing your
visa application. They will follow up and have your application allocated
to a case officer for further processing.

We appreciate your patience in this matter.

You have to take their advice and be patient in this matter. Unfortunately, the Department of Immigration does not get quicker at processing your application because it receives lots of follow up enquiries. If you had an agent, they would much likely give you the same advice.

Hello Fernandes,

Thank you for your detailed comment but unfortunately my expert opinion does not cover predictions for how long it will take for a case officer to be assigned to you case and the visa to be granted. It not a perfect science and as you will tell from other comments on this blog, some people are having very different experiences in terms of processing, although they have applied for the visa.

All I can say is, “sit tight and be patient”, as soon as there is news, your migration agent should be in touch to update you.

Hello Chuck,

Thank you for your post but as I have said in my advice to other similar requests asking for a prediction as to when the visa will be granted, I can not tell you.

The process takes time, before the priority processing procedures were put in place by the Department of Immigration earlier this year, general skilled migration could take up to 12 months.

Your agent is the best person for you to consult on these matters as they have full knowledge of your case.

Thank you for your post. Your query is complex one and you really should seek out specific migration advice to resolve it. It can not be done by posting on a blog such as this. You can find the names and contact details of registered migration agents located in India on http://www.themara.com.au, MARA is the professional body that regulates registered migration agents.

Dear Mege,

I’m from India and I got ACT State Sponsorship on 17th Feb and also applied for 176 visa on 2nd March 2009. I have completed work of uploading all required documents within specified time given by DIAC.
My question is who will inform my TRN no to ACT govt ? so that they can submit form 1100 to DIAC.

As I visit the web site to check the status of my application , still I can see that there is a remark of Required against each required documents list , which I have already submitted.

Can you please tell me the time taken by case officer to start the process of file from the date of TRN receipt and total time for VISA approval.

Thanks

Dear Mege,

I am 885 PR applicant alongwith spouse application. I just received a request from the case officer regarding Spouse IELTS requirement as follows:

Functional English Requirement:
The IELTS test report provided for XXX was older than twelve months when you lodged your visa application and therefore is not
acceptable evidence of functional english. Please refer to the enclosed information sheet. They
may choose to pay the appropriate English Education Charge (EEC) rather than sit the test. If
you wish to take up this option, please advise the GSM Brisbane office.

My spouse had given his IELTS in July 2007 and I am of the impression that the IELTS result is valid for 2 years.

Considering it is hard to book an IELTS date at the earliest, we are quite concerned of what can be done.

Your advise on the above matter will be highly appreciated.

Moreover, my spouse is employed in Australia for more than 2 yrs in an IT firm as Consultant. So is it advisable to provide an employer letter stating english language ability? Actually I am enquiring all this because the nearest available date for IELTS in Sydney is September, so things will just get delayed till then. I think you need to wait until you actually receive a formal request from the Department of Immigration to do the medicals. Save yourself the cost of repeating medicals by waiting for the request.

I generally don’t recommend that skilled visa applicants frontload their medicals just because of this exact situation that has happened to you.

Just wait for further communications from DIAC. If you do your medicals now without an actual formal request from DIAC, they could expire before you have your visa approval. You can see this is what has happened to other people on this blog.

Ofcourse its your own choice to do them now or later.

I applied the visa and send my documents through email attachment and they update status ‘ Recieved”. But the sposonsorship evidence column shows is “Required”. But I asked the DIAC about the 1100 form , and they are replied they recieved that. But still the status same. can i have to ask them about that. I read that when 1100 got they will start the processing. AFter 10 days later it shows that visa further processing. what that mean.

In the DIAC website I found that second application need to pay fee if not got 4.5 point in IELTS. But the my wife has Bacheler degree. So I can be exempted from the fees. DIAC nee any of the following for functional english. please explain

Evidence to attach to your application
To avoid payment of the second instalment visa application charge, you must provide evidence that any secondary applicants 18 years or over included in the application have at least functional English.

This evidence should be provided when requested by the case officer and before the visa is granted

You must provide one of the following:

your IELTS TRF Number to show you have a band score of at least four and a half (4.5) based on all four components.
Important: If you are using an IELTS test to show functional English, it must be from a test sat no more than 12 months before making your application.
evidence that you have a degree, diploma or trade qualification requiring at least two (2) years of full time study or training with all instruction conducted in English
evidence that you have completed at least one (1) year of full time study in Australia towards a degree or diploma qualification with all instruction conducted in English

an initial entry to Australia on these visas by no later than – 10 December 2009 and The 2nd instalment VAC must be paid for each person listed above. The amount depends on
the date the application was received by this office, and is AUD$2,925 for applications received

This application cannot be approved unless the required amount is paid for each applicant named,
and the application may be refused if the amount owing is not paid within the prescribed period
which can be found within the ‘Timeframe for Response’ section of this letter. Further information
about how to make the payment is available at the end of this letter.

If your wife’s degree was from a country where English is not the native language then you should get a letter from that university confirming that the language of instruction for that course was English. Send both degree & letter to Diac and ask this evidence is sufficient.

Dear Mege,

Is is true that DIAC is done with their state/territory sponsorships for this year and they are now taking up the files which are on CSL? As i have mentioned earlier in this forum that i lodged my application in dec 08 and got my CO alloted in feb 09 and they had asked me to undergo medicals and PCC. I have submitted them all but after that i have never heard anything from them. If they are done with state sponsorships this year then does it mean that my case will be considered for the next financial year which begins from 1st july? Please let me know.

Regards,

Arunangshu

PK Patel,

I don’t know how long it will take to get your visa approval. WA sponsorship processing time is between 2-4weeks.

Kind regards,

Hi Mege
I want to apply for visa subclass 885. I have done Master of computing (1 year) and wanted to do Master of Business (another 1 year) both in ANU. As per the study requirement both the courses should be related. Do you have any idea if they are related or is considered related by the case officer when concedering my application.

Dear Neha

As per as I am concerned, applications with state sponsorship is currently being given highest priority under the new direction of immigration minister. You wrote that state Govt.had sent form 1100 to DIAC .Therefore, you are going to be on top of the priority list very soon. Just wait for another couple of days, friend.By the time you will get allocated to your CO,you can prepare for medical and PCC so that eventually you can speed up the processing.

Let me know about the progress of your application.

Take care.

Dear Kowser,

it believes that job varification is done by the Case Officer over the phone.

but, According to the personal experience with some of my friends they didn’t subject to job verification by over the phone. It means that with available information ( written evidences what have been submitted with the lodgement) had enough for some cases.

anyhow my answer is for your concern about job verification is that, according to my knowledge , they done it by over the phone, I suppose. only if necessary.

Dear Sahan

Thanks for prompt response.

I am at my Job place and I asked my employer about the job verification, nobody talked to him over the phone about this and no agent have come yet.

I am little bit worried about this as I don’t know what sort of information do they verify.

By the way, in which country are you staying at this moment and what’s your nominated occupation?

Good luck.

Dear Kowser,

thanks for the reply.

Well I am from Sri Lanka and my nominated occupation is Agriculture Adviser.

Since, A Case Officer is not allocated for your case. don’t much worry. with the same time already you have submitted Employment References. I think , they may check with weather you worked or not in that place.
